World-Check: the global blacklist in which you could be without knowing it
There is a database to which only banks, large companies, governments and agencies have access, it includes almost 3 million individuals or organizations that are under an accusation of economic crimes or are suspicious. Classification of every person from the list is carried out in accordance with the “external sources”: from real convictions … to the post in the blog.
Can you imagine that banks, governments and big companies have at their disposal a list where your name appeared and accompanied by a picture of the red balaclava which means they suspect you as terrorist? So imagine this, because if you are on this list … you will not know.
World-Check is a global database, open on the Internet only for people who can pay a million dollars a year to access it and comment on the information in this database. It is a global blacklist which is controlled by private company Thomson Reuters, the managers of this company decide its content, they decide if they close bank accounts, deny a business, prevent access …
2.7 million records
According to the investigation of Vice News, the database contains more than 2.7 million records. Around 93,000 information items would qualify as “terrorists” to individuals, companies or organizations, there are also categories such as “drugs”, “organized crime”, “slave labour”, “sexual exploitation of minors” or “victim of political repressions”
Police and public sources
The classification is created apparently from information that comes from different sources, whether it is police or public, such as articles, blogs or from social networks. The data includes names, places, date of birth or information about the education of this person, but the Vice News investigation showed that sometimes they include even social security numbers or passports. In the profile of some people you can read:
- Suspected person
- Accused person
- Person under investigation
- Arrested person
After the subscription, you can get a Private Criminal Certificate, which will be available on the Internet. This list also includes links to various sources taken into account in order to give to grant each criminal classification to a subject: in many cases there are links to blog posts in which, for example, this person is accused of terrorism. Although the reliability of the blog is more than questionable.
Thomson Reuters defends the objectivity of sources
Thomson Reuters defends the objectivity of sources consulted to configure and update the list. However, Vice revealed the data on some profiles that have not been updated for more than 8 years, it has affected many people who were reintegrated into society or abandoned their criminal lives. There is a system to appeal the classification for individuals or institutions that are on this list, but you need to know that they are included in this list. The confidentiality clause obliges subscribers who have access to this list to keep absolute secrecy about its contents, so the bank can close the account of the subject without giving any explanation and this subject will never know that the reason for closing the account is presence in the World- Check … so you can never protect yourself and leave this database.
Any company that uses or maintains blacklists can abuse human rights because of violation of “their right to privacy”. Victims of such activities should have the possibility to contest in the courts such irregularities in court with a claim for compensation for the damage caused said-Peter Frankental, Peter Franketal, Director of Economic Affairs of Amnesty International in the United Kingdom
49 of the main banks and public security agencies
49 of the 50 largest banks in the world, 300 government and intelligence agencies, law firms and all types of companies that have access to the database address this list (proposed as the “hidden risk warning system”). This database was established in 1999 and since 2011 it belongs to Thomson Reuters after buying for 530 million dollars. This industry is not controlled by any government and can reach a value of $ 30,000 in the coming years, it is one of those industries that presents the greatest potential for growth in nowadays, despite the moral aspects of classifying people according to what it is published about them on blogs.
